After a certain amount of dithering it was decided that ‘yes’ 1B Peak Lane would enter the Fareham in Bloom competition.
Time was of the essence but soon both service users and staff all joined in. We dug, planted, cut, dead-headed, weeded, watered and finally swept. The judges arrived, took photographs, asked questions and made some encouraging comments.
Then it was time to attend the prize giving reception. This was attended by the manager and a representative from the service. At the prize giving reception and surprise surprise, not a wellington boot in sight! Smart casuals, bow ties and glitzy tops were prevalent. After being greeted with a drink we were shown to our table which was shared with six friendly ladies and two representatives from the local pub, all fellow contestants.
Any weight-watchers present immediately had a problem! The attractively laid table was laden with an appetizing array of sandwiches, vol au vents, sausage rolls and other home made goodies. Whilst the first half of presentations took place we both tucked in to the food. In the interval we were also served coffee and cakes. On the downside, however, it began to look perhaps our efforts had not been successful this time around. When business resumed we chatted about how things could be improved next year when suddenly we got our second surprise of the night.
There, on the screen for all to see, was the garden of 1B Peak Lane!
Before we could take it all, we were given a warm response from all present, and were invited on stage to collect our certificate from the Mayor and Mayoress of Fareham. A Silver Gilt Medal, no less.
I don’t know what Charlie Dimmock would have made of it all, but I do know everyone at 1B will be over the moon.
